The Three Ms, Muda, Mura and Muri, are the three forms of loss in the Toyota Production System. Together they give a more complete picture of inefficiency than focusing on visible waste alone, because two of the three are usually the hidden causes of the first.
Muda is waste: any activity that consumes resources without adding value, traditionally categorized into seven or eight types such as overproduction, waiting, transport, over-processing, inventory, motion, defects and unused talent. Mura is unevenness: variation and irregularity in flow or demand. Muri is overburden: pushing people or equipment beyond reasonable limits.
The key insight is that Mura and Muri often generate Muda. Uneven demand (Mura) forces overburden at peaks and idleness at troughs, both of which create waste. Attacking visible waste without leveling the unevenness and relieving the overburden that cause it leads to recurring problems.
In plain terms: Most Lean talk is about waste (Muda), but waste usually has parents: uneven flow (Mura) and overburden (Muri). If demand lurches and people are pushed too hard, waste keeps coming back no matter how many times you clean it up. The diagnostic makes you look at all three so you fix the cause, not just the symptom.

Muri, overburden, is addressed by balancing the load placed on people and equipment against their reasonable capacity. This includes standardizing work to a sustainable pace, ergonomic improvements, adequate maintenance, and leveling demand so peaks do not force excessive strain. Relieving overburden reduces errors, breakdowns and burnout, all of which otherwise generate waste.
